Story
Update #2
We have managed to significantly exceed our initial target so a huge thankyou to everyone who has donated and supported this effort, I will be officially finishing the fundraising campaign on April 14th. I'd especially like to thank my family and Jessica for all of the patience, support and logistics, not the least being a rescue mission in the middle of the night.
I recently attended the 2023 launch of the humanitarian scholarships program and was able to meet a number of the students, past and present, who have been helped by the program and will benefit from your donations. It was great to see the real impact that it has had and to hear from them about their inspiring stories. It certainly makes it all worthwhile.
Introduction
Education is transformative. It has life-changing effects on individuals, families and communities. But most young people from refugee and asylum seeker backgrounds are ineligible for HECS-HELP and other government support schemes in Australia – and are charged international student fees. That's why we've decided to fundraise for the Humanitarian Scholarship as a team to make an even bigger difference! In the first week of 2023 our team will be attempting to ride 500km, a small sacrifice to make if it will inspire you to donate to what's a compelling cause.
To add an extra twist, I will attempt to complete the 500km in one ride. Having ridden 400km in 40hrs when I was a lot younger and fitter I know how much of a challenge 500km in one ride will be so wish me luck, or even better support my pain with your donation. I'm not sure if this is even possible but I will give it my best effort.
I'm planning at heading off at 4:30am and will post a link here to a live-track of the ride just in case you want to watch from afar. I'm estimating it will take 20 hours to complete if everything goes to plan, which we can almost guarantee won't be the case so let's see how this unfolds.
Any donation, big or small, would be greatly appreciated and will make a real difference to someone's education and life prospects. Thanks so much!
An update:
Ahead of a fuller report I just wanted to let you know how yesterday’s big fundraising ride finished up as the tracker stopped working and several people had questions. In short it was a fairly brutal day that finished with a rescue mission at 1am this morning with 440km on the clock; at that stage I was facing a few more hours in the rain to get home and my body/mind wasn’t having a bar of it. A billion thanks to Jessica for pouring me into the car, her second trip across Sydney in the day, and for tolerating my folly, helping with the fundraising, and fielding many calls over the day. You are officially the best.
We have managed to raise over $5,000 which is just amazing, thankyou so much to all of you that have donated. We will keep the page open so it you'd like to make a donation the window is still open.

A huge thanks to those of you that helped with the riding which made a huge difference: The crew who came up to Mt White, Sean and David for a huge 250km loop to Wisemans and Windsor, and Jeff who spent at least 100km with me from Richmond when I was in a deep hole. Also thanks to Chris for lending me all of the lighting required for the 8 hours that was in the dark and for everyone’s encouraging words which really helped.
